Are Schreibers any good?

I was just wondering if it was a good idea to buy a Schreiber. The one I have at school is good, (much better than that cheap and nasty Dulcet) and I need to buy or rent my own bassoon next year, and yeah...
Any thoughts?

Yes, Schreiber is a good name. BUT, and this is a big but, any bassoon with a great name can be a dud. It depends entirely on how the bassoon has been treated over the years and what condition it is now in. If you have access to a few different bassoons in your local shops, try them all. It is a fairly safe bet to stick with the German makes, plus Fox, which is made in the U.S., for your used bassoons, with the aforesaid stipulation that you've really got to try them out and have the music shop vouch for their condition, especially if you're buying. Renting is a different story as you can take them back and switch or get repairs done if they're not right.

Yes, the one I have (which is falling apart and made decades ago) is still a very nice bassoon.

I play an Adler, which I preferred to the Schreibers in the shop when I got it.
It's a good idea to get some advice from your teacher as they tend to see more bassoonists.

My teacher said in his own words that he is more qualified to teach clarinet and saxophone than bassoon. He can't help us with anything really.
