Hi!

Does anyone here have experience with mutes for bassoon? I am a student and I don't want to disturb the other students in my house when I am practising. I already found that mutes are available, but I don't know if they could be useful to me. Are they just meant for the low tones or for every register? And do they really reduce the volume?

Who can help me?

Tom

There is no bassoon (or any woodwind) mute that will work like those for brass instruments. They are only useful for taming some of the lower notes - eg a pp low B.

I have seen these same items on eBay and often wondered if they would work, and how well. Mind you, anything you put in there is going to mute things sightly, even an old sock! Try a few things and see if anything helps keep your landlord from kicking you out.
