Exactly - don't worry about the horrible (or, less horrible) sounds that come out at first. I found that (and still find) that a quality reed, when wetted and warmed-up, always helped with the sound - this may make sense to all of us fellow bassoonists, but when I first started, I had no idea how fussy a reed could actually be until I started to learn bassoon.
