I have and opportunity to buy a G Mueller bassoon, but I can't find anything about the brand. Anyone ever heard of it. I know it has more keys than the usual student bassoons, but that doesn't ease my concerns about tone quality & intonation.

I think they were Schreiber made bassoons, but could be by another maker.Does it say 'made in Germany' on it?

If this is the one on e-bay at the moment the description is incorrect.

"This has more keys then just the normal student bassoons like Linton 5K or 6K. This is a professional instrument is what I have been told."

The first sentence is wrong - it has the same number of keys, if not fewer, than modern student bassoons. (Lacks high D key & whisper key lock). I also feel the description is a bit optimistic calling it a 'professional' model. By the look of it it could very well be a Schreiber in which case it should be quite good.

The seller & his repairer obviously know very little about bassoons. If they know what they are talking about & it is indeed a professional level instrument without major faults apart from normal wear & tear I would expect it to be listed at a much higher price even with a bocal & decent case.

At the price though it might worth getting a s a beginner bassoon.

Thanks for your input. I ended up passing it up. The seller just made me leary. A little too much to spend to not be confident in what you're getting. I appreciate your expertise.

You can find an old Fox/Renard, and then it will actually work and save you a lot of headaches and wasted reeds!

That is if it has been maintained properly
