I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Orpheo maple bassoons... I just found out i need to buy my own bassoon, because mine sounds terrible...it could just be me though. I cannot get any good reeds, and all of them sound bad and get leaks the next day. Please someone look into this for me.
Much appreciated

To repeat what I have said numerous times on this forum - Are you sure the bassoon is adjusted correctly? They are complex mechanical devices & need to be maintained. Do you have a teacher if so what does he/she say about it & your playing? Presumably it's a school instrument - pester the band director & get the thing checked out before condemning it.

As to Orpheo bassoons it is not a brand I know but judging from the price being asked I would think it is a Chinese made bassoon stamped by an importer - although the quality of these is slowly improving I do not recommend them as a long term proposition either musically or mechanically.

I feel you would do best to stick with recognised brands - Fox, Moosmann, Adler, Schreiber etc. As even student grade bassoons are expensive items do consider secondhand rather than new - you can get more for your money that way but, as with, cheap new ones, you can buy a dud. So do get advice from a competent bassoon teacher, player or repairer (I know they can be hard to find in some areas) before parting with your money.

Good luck

Contra448 has given good advice. I'd follow it for sure. As for your present bassoon, you would be much better to spend a few hundred dollars now to get some good lessons and advice from a bassoon teacher than to spend thousands of dollars now on another bassoon and find you made the wrong decision. He will help you with the reed problem, too.

I agree with the other posts, but if buying a bassoon is your descision, NEVER buy a brand...
a.)from china
b.)that is not popular
most of the bassoons, and flutes, with the above qualities end up being more trouble than thier worth. In the end, you actually end up spending all the money you saved by NOT buying a brand like schreiber, etc. trying to fix it up. I know a gitl who recently bought a solid silver flute off ebay with the qualities mentioned, and now its giving her a heck of a lot of problems. Yuck...
