There is a man in the Phillarmonic in my area who soaks his reed in alchohol...What are the benefits of this? Other people also soak their reeds in a 50/50 solution of water and listerine. What is the point in that?

My guess would be killing bacteria. Preventing mold? Although I would imagine it could kill the read too.
