Hello to all on the forum I have been playing the bassoon for about
3 mounths and have enjoyed it very much. I was lucky enough to get a bassoon from
my high school. It's a mirafone and I really like it. This is basicly a hello to all and a thank you for the info that I've gained from reading the posts.

Thank you all

Hi there - I'm new to the forum too so I thought I'd say hi to you... I'm not an entirely new bassoon player. I used to play at school and now (after six years of terrible loneliness with out a bassoon) I am finally making my return!! :D It is just SO addictive... I'm hooked by the crook! (Sorry that's a terrible joke - even worse when lots of people call them bocals nowadays!) xx

Yes, it is a terrible joke, but very funny anyway!

Welcome to you both. There's lots of good information in past posts here, just search around and read to your heart's content.

Thanks for the welcome it's now been about 6 months now and
I'm learning Gavotte by Gossec. I'm also learning to play a few beatles
tunes because they were the group I listened to growing up. I still really am
starting to love the bassoon and am getting closer to deciding if I want to make
the bassoon a second principle instrument. Once again I would like to thank you
for your welcome replies(sp) I will continue to read and learn more information
on this forum from all of you.

Thanks Bassoonman3000

With transposing instruments the note that you hear when you play a written C is the 'key' note of that instrument. So a low C on a tenor sax sounds the Bb an octave and plus a tone lower, which is the 2nd line bass clef Bb for bassoon.

Tenor sax is a Bflat instrument (like a clarinet). Bassoons are C instruments. Basically to transpose from a Bflat horn to a C horn you play one whole step up from the note you are reading in your tenor sax music. You will have to adjust the key signature accordingly. If the tenor sax music reads Bflat, play C on the bassoon; if the tenor sax music reads G, you play A on the bassoon. You must also adjust the octave you play in, but get the notes right first, then worry about the octave.

Sorry Drew you are incorrect - to go from a part written for Bb instrument to one in C you must transpose DOWN a whole step. Plus, in this case, down an octave.

As I said earlier, with a transposing instrument when a player fingers a written C the note sounds the key note of that instrument - eg Bb for tenor sax & Eb for alto sax. Which means that for a Bb instrument to play with concert pitch ones the part for the Bb instrument must be transposed UP a step.

... for example when a piece is written in C Bb instruments play in D.
