Constantly clearing reed/bocal

I find I'm constantly having to clear my reed and bocal and finding it really frustrating. I can't seem to make it through a single piece without it clicking like crazy on me, and I have auditions for school coming up really soon. Does anyone have any suggestions for preventing it from becoming blocked so often? Thanks in advance!

No one seems to have an idea about this - and I don't either. The only thing I would suggest is to check your whisper key hole on your bocal to make sure it is clear (blow or suck on it, whichever works). While playing, if you have a few measures rest, take off your reed and blow hard through the bocal. That should clear it momentarily.

Do you blow out your reed after you take it out of the water before playing? That's the only other thing I can think of.

I make sure to get the water out of my reed before I put it on the bocal. Normally I would just take it off and clear it, but one of my pieces doesn't have a full bar of rest anywhere, and it unfailingly ends up clicking when I play that one.

Maybe cleaning the bocal out will help. Get a bocal brush from one of the dealers. (I cannot suggest anywhere - I'm on a different continent). Even just washing it out can help to get rid of accumulated muck. To reduce this happening always clean you teeth or at least rinse your mouth out with plain water before playing. Do not drink sweet, sticky drinks before or during playing sessions.

Maybe you are just naturally a 'wet' player, especially if relatively new to wind instruments - this should improve over time. You might also be using reeds that are a bit hard which is more likely to make this worse.

I swab my bocal every time I play. I also clean my teeth every time I play, and I've been playing woodwind instruments for about eight years.

My reeds are also handmade by either myself or my teacher and adjusted accordingly.

Try begging or borrowing another bocal from somewhere and see if the same thing happens.
