Does anybody know where I can buy a good quality red Trumpet? My son has always wanted one, he is a fairly advanced player, and I`m thinking it would make a good HS graduation gift. Thanks!

the Martin Committe trumpets are wicked good! but expect to pay for them. They do make then im various colours. But make sure you get one of their decent pro line models.

Ouch! I saw the Martin-LeBlanc in red for $2029. Pretty steep. Do you know anything about the Giardinelli ($550) or the Lazer ($600)? Are they too cheap to have good sound? THANKS!

personally i havent heard anything about them at all! which is a bad sign. You could look at custom taylor made trumpets... which are steep too. Im afriad to tell you, if you want a custom red trumpet, and dont want it to be poo you are looking at paying out some $$$$. But if you were looking for a really decent brass horn or even a silver you could look a lot cheaper.

But somthing as custom as colour, which is a rarity to have, will cost money, espeically on a decent horn.

Well, you could probably get a red trumpet on E-bay, but you might be looking at crap. I see colourful piccolos all the time, and clarinets etc., but they state that they`re made in China. I`d just love to play a colourful instrument, even if they`re crappy, but I might get bored of the colour.

i like giardinelli a lot but that is most likely a student model. you gould get a nice regular trumpet and then take it to a shop or a jewler and have it painted red. that won`t affect the sound at all and it will look really nice

if you want to do that you could purchase a getzen trumpet off ebay for about 400 dollars. the Doc Severinsen Getzen and the getzen 700 series trumpets are very nice and than you might pay 1oo-2oo dollars for getting it painted. that would be a lot better than the giardinelli...

OF course, painting a trumpet would affect the sound. Have you ever heard of Pros taking the laquer off their trumpets? Thats cause the coating on the outside changes how the horn and the brass vibrate, and resonate. But the painting process might take a while, they will have to remove any finish and then specially airbrush the horn with a coloured laquer. So my advice is, purchase and really nice silver horn. Somthing like a solid Besson (watch out for the ones made in India... CRAP) Besson is a great horn maker and not too pricy. The Getzen DOC Sev model is good, but look to spend $500 (plus shipping, if you get it from Ebay) and then $200 (at laest) for the coloured laquer job. Especially if no one around you can do that for you, it might cost a lot to send it away and get done, plus the time period you are looking.

A few nice horns that are in a resonable prince range (in silver, because the red colour will show better) are:

- Benge trumpets in general
- Besson trumpets (minus the ones made in India)
- Older Conns like the Connselation
- Bachs (the older the better)

there are so many, just if you have a question about a brand, just ask.

OHH and by the way i just thought, Jupiter makes really nice horns now they have defiantly stepped up. I know they have a really nice Tribune Series, the 1600 is sweet, but the 1010 i think it is is a really nice horn, and inexpensive for a pro horn brand new. And by the way ive seen them in black..... and i know Jupiter makes red pocket trumpets (which might be a good gift too, cheaper and soo cool) So im guessing they can do a Red one for you, for no extra cost.

painting it won`t change the sound. I would know seeing as how i`ve done it to 8 or 9 of my horns. You`re thinking about plating which will have an affect on the sound

You don`t want to paint an instrument. You are probably thinking of a lacquer finish, which will considerably change the resonance (sound) of the horn. All of the red trumpets you can buy are red lacquered. If you want to buy a new trumpet of professional quality, you would probably be paying close to $1500 or more, so $2000 for a red one is not a major step up. Otherwise, I would suggest as others have that you start with a good silver plated horn and have it professionally lacquered in red lacquer.

painting a horn Will not change the sound of a horn un less you put like an inch of paint on it. if you paint the visible parts of a horn it will not change sound at all. i would know seeing as how i`ve done it many of times

Changing any detail about a horn will change the sound, whether it is noticeable to you or not. As for painting, it will change the sound considerably and noticeably as paint is a thick material when applied to coat something.

One coat of paint from a jeweler or someone who knows how to work with instruments will NOT change the sound. if you apllied it yourself then yes it most likely would change it a bit. But not if you got it done professionaly. once again I would know. i play professionally and have had jewelers paint horns and then gloss it so it looks all shiny and it does not change the sound
