Changing any part will change the sound of a horn, and adding a coating to the brass will certainly deaden the resonance.

Derek will you agree that when you place a coating no matter what that coating is, it changes the "overall" composition of the item. If you get a jewler to coat an instrument they will put a forgien substance on the horn. This substance no matter what it is, will change the whole horn.
Now, if you will agree that the sound (or tone) of a trumpet comes from the intsrument resonating. And different materials resonate differntly... thats whey silver horns and brass horns have different sounds/tones/quality.
So therefore if you change the composition of the instrument by adding this coating (no matter what it is) it will change the sound of the instrument, from when it didnt have the coating on it.
(this is excluding a laquered finish... which we are assuming the instrument already has, and to replace it will pretty much have the same affect)
Therefore Derek, to add a forgien coating onto of the laquer will make the external coating very thick, and resist the brass or silver from resonating consistantly, which in turn affects the sound quality and tone.
good day

we`re talking about a very thin coat of paint. we`re not talking about going to lowes and picking up some random red paint that people use on their houses. the paint is sprayed on and then glossed over. it`s too thin to change the sound i tell you i know what i`m talking about I`ve done it. I`ve also taken a painted horn and an unpainted horn of the same model and recorded the same song on them and then checked the recordings against each other. If professional recording equipment doesn`t hear a difference than neither will you

My son`s first trumpet was a red student model. He has moved on to a better quality of trumpet and has been searching for a red one that`s not lower end. We finally found someone to do a custom job and for his next birthday he can go back to being "red trumpet boy". I didn`t have a lot of luck finding any good quaility red trumpets that were more $$ than I had to spend. I can send you the name of the guy who`s doing it for us if you email me.
