is it true that once you learn the french horn (which seems to be harder than trumpet) that learning trumpet will be much faster? or will you immediately know the trumpet too because most of their fingerings are the same?

well i started on trumpet then played horn for a semester. It was fine, I picked up pretty fast... trumpet is easier in that on horn the pitches are a lot closer together and you need a really good ear to hear if you`re playing the right note. Also the fingerings are a little different (i.e. low d on horn is 1 and middle d is open i think but not sure, it`s been a year). I like trumpet a lot better, but yea the two are very similar and if you play one you should be able to pick up the other pretty easily.

according to my teacher, he does not reccomend playing both of these instruments, but rather sticking to one. He says the embasure is much different for both so you will have problems switching....

I play both...I have no trouble at all..matter of fact I`ll switch in the middle of and on durring pep band. I started on trumpet first, I actually think it would be a lot easier that way. Good luck with what ever you do !!!!!!

Yes I believe that after learning french horn trumpet is very easy. French horn and trumpet share many similarities such as: fingerings for notes, and the similarity in the mouthpieces! I learned to play trumpet first and it would have been better to learn the french horn first.

I started on french horn in 6th grade and have been playing it for 4 years, but I`ve also played trumpet (and trombone) in jazz and marching bands. I found the accuracy to be much better on trumpet, but I had a much harder time with the high notes. All trumpet fingerings will work for horn, at least as alternates, but they are a little different. The horn fingering for a note is the same as the trumpet fingering for the note 1 octave higher. So just take the fingerings down an octave.
