well pretty much the best rap music youre going to accomplish transcribing is either something someone else already did or one that actually has a musical background i.e. alisha keys. Not much you can do with rap, only if you expect to play one note over and over again in the rhythm of whatever song you decide to audition with. Look rap music in my opinion is for the beat to dance to, the lyrics to listen to, and the artist to act like. Rap music doesnt contain much to work with, only if youre going to improv over it which i have heard musicians do. Try looking up trumpet players that have done that. Also if youre going to audition with rap you might as well get a cd of some beat that repeats over and over again for you to play with, might be alot funner(is that a word) that way. Good luck with that and my advice is, if they really didnt assign pieces to audition with, im really skeptical about your music program at your school. Try playing a piece out of Rubank, those are most standard pieces for high school level work. Trust me youll have a harder time preparing those works then transcribing a rap song, but hey, if you are really motivated to do so have with it.

dun worry the first 2 posters are trolls/haters.

i think playing recent music is a good way to go in getting attention at an audition, but rap music is not the way to go. most rap songs don`t follow a melody. i think R&B is a better way to go. like alicia keys and john legend.

or maybe you could arrange 5-10 good beats from your favourite rap songs (ones with melodies within the beat) and then smoothly switch beats. it could be a cool medley if you explain what you`re playing.

play blue bells of scotland out of the arban`s book. and by the way waht competition did you go to that said you`re the best band in the country? my band went to Musicfest Orlando and took first place in the nation for jazz and tied for first in concert. we competed against high school bands and all that and we beat them too.

i think for auditiong you should try and figure out if your conductor likes more modern stuff or if they like older traditional stuff, then go off that. I just can`t see rap being used as an audition piece however...

What opinion do you think you`re going to get here, man? Most of us realize that rap is a very simple musical form, and is mostly lyrically oriented. If you`re going to transcribe rap lyrics and play that at an audition, then chances are, you`re going to be stuck at the bottom of the barrel, because people in the concert band and orchestral community don`t look very highly upon popular music.

If you want to be succesful in this audition, you`re going to want to go to a music store and look for some solo trumpet pieces. Chances are, you`ll find something sufficiently challenging, and without Usher, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, or 50 Cent on the composer line.

If you want to listen to rap, by all means, go for it, we won`t stop you. Just don`t bring it into an audition and expect to be recognized. That`s just how it is.

Thomas
