Will,

First off know that silver is NOT better. It doesn`t change the way the horn plays or anything else - if you get it, it should be because you like it, not because it`s "silver". Silver is, in general harder to keep looking good, but will last longer than lacquer which will tend to wear (especially on lower end horns) pretty quick.

Next, don`t get a TR300. They`re equal to an old Bundy and really aren`t good horns. Terribly inconsistent, ect. You`d be better off to get a TR200 (the more advanced horn... for some reason). The BEST idea, in my opinion, is to purchase a Yamaha 2335, Conn 1050B/1050, Conn Director, or Blessing ML-1. The Blessing ML-1 can be bought new for $650 and is a "professional" horn that plays pretty well. It`s not as good as a stradivarius or Xeno, but it`s an OK horn, especially for the money.

Good luck and email me if you have questions!

Will,

None of the horns I pointed out are cornets, and no, you probably won`t be able to get a /new/ horn for that. Used horns are just fine - if you want a new one, save up $1600 and get a good horn. If you only have $500 to spend, get the best thing you can for your money - a good used horn. Conn 1050B`s are great as are Yammy 2335s.

Cheers!

Getzen severinsen model on ebay! perfect price and great horn. especially the ones from the 70`s. also the 700 eterna getzen would be about the same price on ebay.(that`s what i play). Give the Getzen a look. lots of music stores will have the 700 eterna and you can probably try it out. the bore size probably would fit you well and they have great valves and if you ever want to play jazz, Getzen is a great choice.

I`m happy with my 180-37 Strad now that I got the valves aligned, solder blobs removed and horn frozen. I`m also a big fan of my Yamaha Chicago C trumpet and P5-4 Picc. I`ve not used a Severinsen Getzen before, but I`ve heard they`re fabulous.

I certainly can sympathize with your not wanting to spend $2.5k on a horn. I spent $2k on my P5-4, $3k on my C and $1100+300 on my Bb.

Cheers!

Will,

Buy that ML-1! You won`t get a better horn for $375.

No, I`m not a professional though I am majoring in trumpet performance at the University of Miami next year. I hope to be a professional.

Tips? Get a good private teacher NOW. Don`t wait until later - if I had gotten a teacher in seventh grade I`d be so much better than I am now. Seriously, a teacher can and will make a tremendous difference in your playing.

Also, make time to practice! You won`t get better if you don`t make time to do it. No excuses. I put in 4 hours a day, but I don`t have the time to put 4 hours in a day. I make the time though....

Cheers!
