Will,
You probably could get a Yamaha for a bit less in Japan, but I don`t know about China. They`re not the best of friends so I don`t imagine their trading system is so great as to keep prices too far below American prices. I`m telling you, buy that ML-1. It`s a great horn for the $$$.
Cheers!

Will,
As do I...
That 4335, too, is a nice horn and bargain at that price. The ML-1 and 4335 are both very good horns and I would probably want to own the 4335 over the ML-1, just because I`m a Yamaha fan. They seem to produce a better overall horn than nearly every other trumpet manufacturer, especially in there student/semi-pro horns. There upper line stuff still lacks the pizzaz to make me buy another one their horns besides my Chicago C, but Bob Malone and John Hagstrom are working on it.
They`re both good horns - whichever you can get you will be satisfied with.
Cheers!

I recommend the Blessing ML-1

For what it`s worth - My son has owned a Blessing ML-1 for two years. His last instructor was very pleased with it, and told us it would last and play well far beyond the student and intermediate horns out there. The Blessing company bills it as a top of the line professional horn, but it really falls more in the intermediate line. I am convinced that for the money, you cannot do better. Good sound, plays well, does not dent easy and has a good, solid case. The only problem we had was that in the first year we had to re-glue the pearls on.

Will,
Stay away from the Director if you have the possibility of a Yamaha 4320 or ML-1. Either horn would be great but the Yamaha is, in my opinion, the better horn overall. They really make superb stuff. Not to say Blessing doesn`t do well, I just think, overall, Yamaha puts out a better, more consistent product.
Cheers!

I agree with a lot of what aaron has been saying. The Director is a no. You won`t get too far and be satisfied. if there`s one thing i`ve learned when buying horns is don`t settle for something ok. get the best that you possibly can or you`ll regret it after a few years or months. The blessing is a pretty good horn but i`m not too fond of how they play in the upper register. or at least not the old ones i`ve heard that they`ve gotten a bit better. Yamaha makes nice horns but i wouldn`t reccomend buying another student horn if you`re planning on playing through high school or college. Getzen is my favorite but it might not be yours. i really like Getzen valves and the sound "color" (gosh i hate that word for sound) of the horns. the Severinsen model is especially good for jazz. the 700s and 900s are both good for jazz and orchestra. the custom getzens if you can find them for cheap are the best horns. they are definitely worth the 2,500$ that they go for but i don`t have that kind of money. I will tell you not to go with a jupiter horn unless its serial number starts with a letter after "e". Bachs are always good but i think that they will be more expensive than you want. schilke are frikkin` awesome but are very expensive. that`s most of the advice that i can give you on trumpets.
p.s has anyone played the blessing model b155 flugelhorn? if you haven`t you should try it. it`s a very nice horn

Aaron is right, the Yammie would be the way to go, stay away he directors if at all possible and i have pesonally played the TR-300s so i know that they suck, at my school they start beginners on yammie 2335`s and i would venture to say even though i have long since moved on that they are enough horn for a student who just wants to play in high school and then recreationally after/during college, they really do play quite well. P.S. any of you guys who read this forum, come on down to www.trumpetherald.com, and www.trumpetmaster.com, trumpet master features Manny Laureano the principle trumpet of the minnesota orchestra and a renowned teacher with his own forum and he is very personable and easy to get in contact with and will answer any of your questions, there are many people there that can answer your questions much better than many of them are being answered on this forum.

Will,
Thanks for the incentive but you`d be best off to find a good teacher in your area. Email me with your city and state if you want some help finding a local teacher. I have a bunch of "contacts" and can usually find a good teacher for someone in any area.
Cheers!

www.abimusic.com
has the Kanstul 610 at $489 in the store. AWESOME horn for that money. Low end, but still built by Kanstul. Give `em a call. I`m not associated with the shop, it was to be new trumpet, but decided to have a custom one commissioned instead.
Good luck!
