this will be my first year as first trumpet any advice or things to work on in the summer to help me? thanks

If you don`t already know them, work on all 12 major and minor scales. Repitition of the scales, arpeggios amd etudes in each key will eventually help you recognize the various key signatures to a degree that the fingerings will come with increasing ease. Try to know the music you`ll be peforming a little better than the other section members (ie. make sure you practice more than them), and keep an open line of communications with them. If it appears that it would help, if any one is having difficulties with the music, if possible, hold separate section rehearsals to work out the rough spots. Don`t try to "take charge", just let them know they can call on you any time they have a question, and that if you don`t have the answer, you`ll get it for them. As much if not more than anything else, be their friend.
