Althogh I personally havenot mastered (or even begun) circular breathing, I am familiar with the basic concept. One who can do this can play continuosly because they are inhaling through their nose as they are playing (buzzing. Therefore its known as circular breatging because one has a constant supply that is used to play. That`s what I think it is, but you would be better off to have someone more experienced in this area to give you advice. I am also curious of how to do this so if anyone has some suggestions I would be happy to hear them. Hope this helps. Later.

Hello
Before you begin to practice circular breathing, read up on the health problems it causes. Supposedly it will shorten your life expectancy. However take this with a grain of salt.

I dont know much about it, but basically when you need air, you puff up your cheeks and use your toungue and facial muscles to push air out instead of the lungs while taking a quick breath through your nose. It`s hard, just search for stuff online for it...
as for shortening life expectancy, i didnt know that

no it will not shorten your life expectancy. You do not breathe in your mouth and out your noses at the same time. You puff your cheeks up with air and then squeeze the air that is in them out wihile breathing in through your nose. I was lucky enough to play with James Morrisson a few weeks ago and you should see him do it- he is a freak!!!!

The concept is the same as when you are drinking a coke through a straw, except backwards.
Get a coke, (you might notice it more with a think milkshake...preferably strawberry) and drink. Pay attention to how you are doing it. You create suction with your mouth and are still able to breath. Same concept with circular breathing only much much harder. You have to create pressure (as opposed to suction) and control the pressure coming out so you don`t run out while you are taking in a quick breath. Practice with the straw. It will be easier to figure out if your trumpet is in the other room.
Also practice breathing, in order to do circular breathing correctly you have to be able to fill your lungs up quickly.

I won`t deny the technique would work with lots of practice, but I`ve never seen any music scored for trumpet that didn`t have places to breathe.

Bryan is right the straw does help...oh yah bry thanx for that comment on my post about 7 months ago or so....it helped a ton I can now circular breath pretty good.... another thing to try get some water and sqirt it out of ur mouth while you take in breaths...it gets you used to using ur muscles around ur mouth. at first you`ll fell very wierd but once you think you have the concept down try it on ur horn play a simple f or 2nd leger-line g and try to hold the note while circular breathing....now here is when it comes to the hard part because you will probably slip up to the next partial.... it`s natural don`t worry about it...just work to control those cheek muscles... and DON`T let all the air you just breathed in go into ur mouth to fast...cause thats another cause of partial jumping... control your air don`t get juts of fast air.....if you can manage all this and get it down your deff on ur way!!! good luck!!

The way i was taught to practice circular breathing is, you fill your mouth up with water, as much as you can without choaking.Make sure your lungs do not fill up with air. They must be in a slightly "exhailed position". Using your cheeks, squirt the water out in a stady stream while at the same time inhailing with you nose. As yuo get better, lessen the amiht of water in yourmouth untill you can doit withonly air. It really works because, with the water in your mouth your subconsious mind knows not to inhail the water.
