Can someone assist me with finding out the differences between the Trumpet, the Cornet and The Flugelhorn? I need to know the differences before I venture out and make the purchase of the instrument that i will learn to play.
Thank you for any assistance offered.

i know basicly the looks of it...the trumpet is long and has a relativley small bell, the fluglehorn is basicly a squished trumpet with a huge bell, and a cornet is a smaller trumpet with the same range

My God do you know nothing people?! :p A cornet is used in brass bands. It is smaller and has a slightly more mellow sound than a trumpet. The mouthpiece shaft is shorter and often it is harder to get higher notes on a cornet. A flugel horn is a bigger instrument. It is held like a trumpet, but the lead pipe is bigger and a often a much deeper mouthpiece is used, it gives a very mellow sound, and is often scored for jazz ballads. It is the hardest out of the 3 to get high notes on. Pete (16yrs)

Anyone want to know why they play like that? Okay, the trumpet is mostly straight bore with a quick bell flair. That means that from beginning to end, the diameter of the tubing is about the same (it does start out a little smaller and get bigger in the leadpipe, and the bell stem, but not too much.) The cornet is similar to the trumpet, except that it is a much more conical bore. It doesn`t project quite as well, but has a much darker, warmer sound. The flugelhorn is a completely different instrument. The leadpipe is shorter and starts out very small and gets larger rather rapidly. In the bell flair, the whole thing flairs slowly to a very large bell. It plays very darkly (that might not be a real word) and has the most mellow tumbre, but cannot be played with edge in the sound.
