I`m no trumpet player, but an avid jazzman in my own right--but Dizzy Gillespie was an innovative composer, excellent soloist, and had quite a character. Check out some of his work with Charlie Parker. They were a most excellent team of writers and instrumentalists. He had a big band for a while, but after hearing some of their recordings, I think that they are a bit cluttered in the arrangemnts. But defineitly pay attention to his trademark falling hits (there`s probably some technical term for it). However, he is a bop jazzer, so he takes a bit to get used to.

I find it facinating that instead of learning to play with his head up, he bent his horn at a 45 degree angle so he wouldnt be playing into the ground. and the thing is, they still make them like that, because the angle actually makes the sound sharper...unbelievable.

Unless I`m mistaken, Dizzy Gillespie is responsiible for the advent of the upward angled trumpet bell, which is actually a great concept to make sure you play over the top of your music stand, or that your bell actually points at the audience when you`re looking at the floor instead of at them.

Dizzy was an amazing player. Ever hear of "Night in Tunisia"? Look for the original song, the notes he hits still make my ears hurt. Defintely one of the greatest jazz musicians/trumpet players of all time.

Actually, I believe that Dizzy`s first 45 degree trumpet was created when a singer triped over his trumpet and bent the bell upwards in the accident. Being the nice guy that he was (a bit silly though) he didn`t get mad and just played with it during the gig deciding that the bell bent up allowed him to hear what he was doing, and allow the audience to get more also.

thats an interesting storry.................
the trumpet is called an upright and it is primarily used in jazz and Marching High School and College bands, not for symphonic bands due to the principal of keeping your brass instruments playing towards the ground so they dont drown out your woodwinds.
