I thought Taps are played with no valves pressed? The FDNY and NYPD bugles had the 1 and 2 valve pressed I assume it was played with an E and up, any thought??

That`s the key that taps is written in, and the key it would be in if played on an actual bugle instead of a trumpet.

Bugles are pitched differently than a trumpet, in a different key, it would be 1st valve for a trumpet.

I have it from a military band member who frequently plays taps at funerals with military honors that depressing 1st and 2nd valves on a trumpet is the same key as a standard bugle.

When we played Taps in grade school we always played the 1st and 3rd valve.
