I have played trumpet for three years, I`m in seventh grade, and top of my class. Before I go to high school in two years, I want to make an important desicion:
Should I stay on Bb trumpet or move to flugelhorn, which I would really like to play. Any suggestions?

haha you play both if you`re a serious player. you don`t switch to one or another. A trumpet player also plays flugelhorn and it won`t effect your trumpet playing. You will use your trumpet more but it`s always good to have a flugelhorn with you at every gig and concert just in case your director wants a flugelhorn in a song or two. a lot of times in jazz the part of the music that says what instrument it will sometimes say trumpet/flugelhorn and at parts of the song it will say to flugel and that means you switch to flugelhorn for a while until the music says to switch back.

Most of the time, there is no flugel part. It is usually just used for smooth jazz and balads, and occasionally in concert band. Trumpet is a standard instrument though, and therefore is almost always used.

Actually, your question was answered. You asked whether or not you should switch to playing flugel instead of trumpet and they said you can`t play only flugel, so you have to keep playing trumpet.

if you are asking if you should get a better trumpet or a new flugelhorn than it depends on what you`re playing now... you didn`t make that very clear. what model trumpet do you have?

nope i just reread your question and you clearly asked if you should play flugelhorn or trumpet as in you had to decide between the two... and i answered the question that if you play trumpet you will most likely eventually need a flugel in addition to a trumpet.

Thank you. I have been suporting that decision for a while, but now I have evidence for my case!

PS: I have a Conn 20B, with a 7C mouthpiece. It has worked fine for three years, so...
