The mysteries of high note playing

There is no method or embouchure out there that will instantly give you high chops. It`s not magic, freakish abilities, or body size that produces high notes. I only weigh around 115 lbs and can play to a high A (Above the high C) and can lip trill like mad. It just takes a lot of smart practice to get there.
Muscles in the face need to develop and strengthen. However, they have to strengthen the right way; meaning, everything in the embouchure has to be working correctly. Also, the breath has to be working correctly. When everything is working right, the lips will be responsive, tone quality will be centred, you`ll be fairly flexible, and overall the trumpet playing is efficient. Efficient playing is easy to say, but hard to explain. A couple exercises that I think are good are attacks and glisses (E-mail me for more info on these). Please find a good teacher to show you how to form a good embouchure because once you have this, you can start building range in both directions with no limits. It will take months and maybe years to develop good high chops, and frustration will only test you on how badly you want to become a good player. Take it one day at a time.
P.S. Maynard is good, but there are guys who can play circles around him without playing disgustingly high (i.e. Freddie Hubbard, Allen Vizzuti, and some who passed on such as Clifford Brown, Dizzy Gillespie). Music before high notes. I hope this answers some questions.

D`oh! I opened my big mouth about my lip trilling. My intention was not to bragg about my skills, but for some of you trumpet dudes to consider my recommendations.
I posted the exercise that changed my playing in another trumpet forum entry called "What is a right and wrong embassure??".

I think thats just a cop out "large people can play easier" I know guys with the skinny man body who can get the largest most incredible sound ive heard not to mention high chops. If you work hard at deep breathing and relaxing the body while exhaling i think anyone can hit the high notes. Of course it takes time but doesnt everything good

Hey I just went to the San Antonio Alamodome where the bands of America were held at, and let me just say it was awesome! It was 5A schools from around the country competing to go to the big nationals. They were all really great. Some of those trumpet solos were pretty good. One guy had a trumpet solo and he was hitting some high doubles. He messed up though on the last note. lol ...but it was all good.

i highly disagree with changing mouthpieces. do lots of octave slurs and look up the no hands method. also play petal tones and long tone double or triple octave scales. train your ear to hear different pitches

I practice a lot but i have only managed to almost squeak a G (4 lines above the staff) Is that a high G or double high G??? When i don`t use a lot pressure i can hardly play above an E. Since i got braces I can barely play above a high C (with or without pressure) I practice almost an hour a day and i don`t know why i can`t play higher. Any advice? I want to regain my full range back before the end of this school year because im going to be in the High School Marching band next year. PLEASE help!!!
And i also need help on double tounging. I have two half hour private lesson a week with 2 different teachers and both are trying to teach me how to double tongue but i just can`t get it. I know the sylabls i just don`t get how to pronounce them when tonging.

Hi first off i`m a sophomore in HS and i`m new to playing trumpet. I`ve played trombone since 5th grade and recently started listening to MF and some bill chase stuff. I`ve been playing for 3 months now. I can just touch a triple C and can play high octave and double octave pretty well. That may seem high but i can play that for about 10 minutes until i`m completely shot with everything, any tips?

I just borrowed my friends` Bb trp to try and learn some stuff as I`ve always liked the sound of trumpets.
I don`t want to learn how to play with good tone or anything, I just thought it was funny that I could reach a high F# (natura) above the staff after about 4 days of practice. I`ve never touched a trumpet before and it`s a 7c mouthpiece on a student beginning trumpet worth about $100
I have absolutely _no_ clue what I`m doing. I just found it interesting
After about 5 mins of warming up I`m able to reach high D with 90% accuracy every time.
Does it sound pretty? No. But at least I`m there

I have been playing the triple C too. I consiter it 2 octives above the C above the staff. I like to play it at the end of songs when a note is held. It sounds pretty neat

People on this board are so full of crap it`s almost unbelievable. I say almost because I meet people all the time in real life with what they call "playable high G`s", when in reality they put the horn to their face and look like they are about to have a stroke barely squeezing out a High C.

triple tonguing

hey, for you guys out there that are still single tonguing and want to start multi-tonguing, i suggest that you find an instructor and learn to triple-tongue first. it is much easier to learn double-tongueing, and now youre way ahead of your buddies that are struggling to learn how to triple tongue.
