Hey ppl, my name`s charles. i`m a junior in high school who`s in the marching band. i played the alto saxophone, a reed instrument, but the trumpet is something i`d really like to learn, and i`m aspiring to learn it well enough to march my senior year, it seems that i`m making absolutly little to NO progress at all, and i was wondering if anyone could throw some tips my way that might help a woodwind-at-heart like me to become a stong brass player. thanks!

well...theres no room for sissy woodwind players here! We are brass!!...lol...Just kidding. But, try doing long tones. For example, start on a low c and play it as long as you can using a normal playing breath. Dont make yourslef turn red doing this but dont skimp out on it either. Then move up to a low D, then E, and so forth up the C major scale. If you get tired around A, stop, and move on to something else. Do this EVERYDAY, and it will help. Pratice is key. I`ll get back to you later with some more tips.

You want to make the transition that fast, I`d get a real good, working at the trade, trumpet teacher. I recommend him to correct any bad habits you may fall into. You`re going to need the guidance. I`m a comeback player. Been thru four teachers in the last five years looking for that something that I was missing, but just didn`t know what it was. Found this old pro last year. He`s got me doing nothing but flexibility exercises. No songs. No scales. Flexibility. For the past whole year. And it`s done me a world of good. And did I mention the other magic word? Patience.
Good luck and stick with it.

another thing that will be really hard to transfer is the tounging. If I`m not mistaken sax players tounge with more of the back of their tounge with a "k" tounge. As a brass player, you want to do more of a "t" tounge with the front of your tounge.

If u have master those things mention above. I suggest that u get a suitable tunner. Practice note-by-note by getting the correct sound. I hope that will help u a little. Take notice of ur embochure and air flow. Gud Luck
