I have an old trumpet that has lost most of its lacquer and its brass finish has seen better days. I am thinking of powdercoating it gloss black and replating the slides with brass. Would the powdercoating have any adverse affect on the sound?

Many thanks

Yes. It would make the sound very dull. It wouldnt be as crisp sounding as a trumpet should be. Good luck.

holy crap how many times does a post like this have to come up... THE COLOR OF THE HORN WILL NOT AFFECT THE SOUND. sometimes if it is plated differently or if it is made out of different materials it will sound different but color will not affect anything.

The colour is not the issue, its the material creating the colour. Powdercoating is much thicker than plating. Is it thicker than the lacquer coating its replacing? I dont know.

they would take the plate off before powdercoating and you wouldn`t be able to tell a difference unless you had an idiot do it for you.

It is of course a possibility that an idiot would do it, and it is not only the thickness of the material that maters. The "stiffness" or ability of the material to vibrate is also important, as well as the eveness with which it was apllied and some other things that I`m sure are listed in a physics text book somewhere. So it would probably be best to get several opinions from people who you know do this for a living as well as from whoever happens to sign onto a web forum and feel like typeing that day.

my trumpet teacher has painted many of his older horns purple just for the heck of it and he says he can`t tell a difference with the sound... he used regular paint from Home Depot and he used a paint brush and painted every part that was visible.
