Hi All,

I`m looking to buy a trumpet. I`d rather buy a battered instrument with a bit of charm than a brand new chinese one off ebay, unless you tell me otherwise...

Any hints on buying a trumpet, good brands etc? I really know nothing about them and haven`t much to spend.

Thanks!!

Ah, a good trumpet off of Ebay would be a rosettii(sp?) it is good for a marching instrument, and, it still has a good sound to it. They are about $100 on Ebay, and come with a strong case, and a 7C mouthpiece.

First off, Rosetii isn`t a chinese trumpet, it is well made, and sounds well, and plus, you really aren`t going to find a good name brand trumpet ANYWHERE that is cheap enough.

I reasearched Rosetti Trumpets and I would say that its a safe bet to at least try a Rosetti trumpet. And even if its bad, you can always just sell it again off ebay, maybe for even more than you bought it for.

Good Luck

I`m selling an Amati ATR 314i Bb Pocket Trumpet hardly used. Has a few dents, sounds great and plays perfectly!
This trumpet sells for $349. This is a high quality pocket trumpet made in the Czech republic.

Hi,

Look for an Olds Ambassador even a King or Holton. I picked up a decent King 600 for 40 bucks on ebay.

A no brand name trumpet off the internet is usually a piece of junk & not recommended!!! If you are a beginner or student you will not be able to tell the difference in playing the same brand name horns.

Be careful. You will get what you pay for. Your best bet is to look on ebay for a used Olds Ambassador!

I just sold my Amati pocket trumpet.
Here's some advice I wrote for Ebay on buying a any Trumpet:

I am a professional trumpet player of 35 years and the purpose of my guide is to let students and parents know about shopping for a Pocket Trumpet. First of all a Pocket Trumpet is a fun and unique looking instrument but basically a gimmick for advanced Trumpet players. Be aware that for the beginning student a normal Trumpet is always recommended. Keep in mind: "Teacher approved," "Instructor approved," "German engineered," "This is a genuine" or "This is not a Cheap imitation"..etc. means absolutely nothing on a website or anywhere else and is a red flag! Remember just because a Trumpet looks great doesn't necessarily mean its a good instrument. A Pocket Trumpet or any Trumpet is never under any circumstances to have the outside lacquer inside the valve chambers! Make sure anyone you buy a Trumpet from understands you will not tolerate this and you expect them to refund all your money including shipping, handling costs on both ends and you will file fraud charges if this happens. Any Trumpet that has lacquer in the valve chambers will not play right and wear out very fast due to the friction of the pistons going up and down. I mention this because I have seen lacquer in the valve chambers of a cheap Pocket Trumpet. A Trumpet should always have real Mother of Pearl valve keys. Colored Trumpets should always have baked on epoxy color not sprayed on or it will come off easily. Make sure a qualified Trumpet player plays your Trumpet when you receive it. A beginner will not know if its them or the Trumpet that doesn't sound right. Low end cheap Trumpets with names you have never heard of usually are unrepairable because music stores won't sell them for good reason and don't carry the parts. Do research on any Trumpet brand you want to buy and the seller. Do they have a Website and distributors? Are there any reviews or complaints? Where are they made? Is the shipping cost overly high and what's the return policy if they send you an inferior instrument? Are you stuck with paying their shipping and handling and your cost to send it back if its no good? Be sure to check for any and all feedback about defective merchandise..etc. If the Instruments are high quality there is little chance of hearing such feedback because they are inspected before being sent by any reputable Manufacturer. The moderately higher priced brand names such as Amati, Jupiter and Holton are of much better quality and worth it, they can be repaired and will have resale value.

My wind ensemble played at midwest in Chicago very recently and I had a chance to try out many different trumpets. Yamahas were ok (with the exception of the Xeno which totally kicked ass) bachs were great as always, selmer's horns were good, Jupiter has some $900 dollar horns that play well, and Conn amazingly had some good stuff. Look into a used Bach, Conn, or Selmer, they are worth the money you pay for them.
