hi all, i`m wondering if you can help me out. i`m going into highschool next year and it seems that all of my friends have new mouthpieces. what i want to know is y? my mom bought me the standard yamaha trumpet for sixth grade and i`ve been playing with it ever since. i still use the original mouthpiece (yamaha 7c) and i dont understand y i would need anything different. i can get in my opinion pretty high( high g is the highest, the one that is above the one sitting on the staff) and my tone is in my opinion pretty nice. i know that a 7c is bigger than a 5c but what are the difference in playing between all of them? thanx

Go to the store and try every size and pick the one that feels the best and makes you sound the best. Everyone`s chops are different, so to say use a 5C or a 7C is tough to call. I used a 5B in HS and now use a 3C. Playing habits change, as do skills and abilities. You`ll probably find that the 7 may be getting too small for you. As far as mouthpieces go, range comes from breath support and cup depth, not rim diameter - so you want to concern yourself with a D or E cup if you want range, though I`d suggest sticking wtih a C. You Don`t want to go with a narrower rim (5 is larger than 7, 3 is larger than 5).
At any rate, comfort is the biggest thing, you`ll have better sound overall with whichever mouthpiece FEELS the best. Don`t just try Bach either. Marcinkiewicz, Shilke, and others all make very different but good pieces.

if your tone and range are both good there is no point in switching. maybe you would like to try out some other mouthpieces and see what you like and then maybe switch but no one here can tell you get this mouthpiece because it will do this for you. every person needs something different. maybe you shoult TRY a 3c, a 5c, a schilke 14, a schilke 16, and a schilke 12. you could have someone listen to you and tell you what you sound best on... don`t tell them which mp you are playing but keep switching and have them tell which one sounds best... don`t just look at your range when you try them out. your range will most likely decrease by a few notes when you go bigger but you should get the notes back with in a few weeks of playing.

My advice on a mouthpiece is to discuss this with your teacher. 7C is the standard student mouthpiece. Most players as they progress move to larger pieces 5C then 3C etc..For Bach mouthpieces, the smaller the number, the larger the mouthpiece.
