Hello people,
I am very new to playing the trumpet, so I`d like some advice about this : I "checked" my trumpet with the piano and the notes seem to be half a tone higher than they should (B-mol sounds like B and so on). Am I doing something wrong, is my trumpet damaged or I`ve missed something?

Tnx in advance,

Tom.

hey tom. dont worry nothings wrong with your trumpet. see, the trumpet is tuned two half steps lower than concert pitch..thus the name Bb Trumpet. so when you play a Bb on the piano the note you want to play on your trumpet. in other words, to match the pitch of a concert tuned unstrument (trombone, piano, guitar plus many others) you have to play two half steps higher than their note.
Ex) on the piano you play a c, on trumpet you play a d
Ex) on the piano you play an e, on trumpet you play a F#. if you have any more questions i`ll check back later. and if you dont understand my answer post back

I`m a band teacher and I know what you are going through. One of the toughest things about this is that you probably go home and practice and you think you are doing it right but when you get to class, it still isn`t high enough. The CLASSIC ARBAN way of making notes go higher on the trumpet or cornet is to tense the cheek and lip muscles (smile) while you add pressure to the mouthpiece. Most band methods today have a CD with them that will let you compare your sound to what is suppose to happen. If you method doesn`t, ask you teacher if he/she can make you a tape ( I`ve done this many times )good luck.

hi
I`m also a Trumpet player...
uhm.. i don`t know if its my place to say..
I`m only a sophmore in High School currently studying at Juliard pre. school for music NY.
but i think i can answer that question..
on that 7 cup, if you feel comfortable, you should stick with it and as you get more advanced you could try other mouthpieces..
right now im using a Bach 3C..
I also started out using a 7C then moved up,
it all depends on what your comfortable with, and what your playing..
i change mouthpieces from size to size depending on what type of music I play whether its JAzz, Marching Band, Drum/bugle corp., or Orchestra..
you should ask your teacher about that.

Hey, ALex
i have been playing on a 7c for 4 years, and i feel that i should change to a diff. one. should i go straight to 3c or 5c. Im playing in symphonic band, and im in marching band. I asked my teacher and he said that i really should. But, im still in the marching band season, and he says its going change everything and i should wait until championships is over. Oh and what Drum/bugel corps are you in??, if u dont mind.
