I was just wondering how many years most of the people on this forum have been playing and about how long you practice a day. I have been playing for almost 6 years now and it is hard to believe I've been playing for so long. Anyway, I have found that the longer I have been playing and the better I get, the more I love to play. Lately I have been practicing 2-4 hours a day while only a year ago it would be amazing if my lips lasted for more than an hour and a half a day. So I would like to know how much your practice time has increased since you started the trumpet. Have you made any improvements to your playing that have made you say wow, I can't believe that I was able to do that!? I am also interested in knowing what drew you to the trumpet in the first place.(I'm sorry if I'm asking too many questions, but I figured that the threads in this forum seem to be moving rather slowly so I might as well post a topic that would probably be on the more conversational side).

I've been playing for about 7 years now and I try to practice for at least an hour a day. I find it interesting that I used to struggle to reach a certain note and then a bit later on, it would just come out with ease. And yes, I also find that the more I practice, the more I love to play.

I practice about 30-40 minutes a day.

When practicising, don't overdo it, otherwise there's good possibility of doing more damage than good.

Also, warming up is crucial to good practice. Scales, starting on F and playing each one in descending order, is something I used to do. Rhythmic patetrns and 'air' exercises are also useful too.

"Scales, starting on F and playing each one in descending order, is something I used to do."

Funny, I do the same thing, except I start on F# and play all the scales in ascending order.

Ive been playing trumpet for about..8 years now. But it's not about how much time you practice in a day, it's WHAT you practice. So if you practice stupid stuff for 2 hrs you get nothin accomplished. You have to practice something meaningful and the correct way or else your teaching yourself trumpet in incorrect way. But other than that my practicing veries because of what i practice. I usually practice 2-6 hours a day depending. This week ive gotten in about 4 hrs a day average. I'm gonna be a senior in highschool this year, and i do plan on majoring in trumpet performance so..believe what i'm saying. Go by the clarke book and practice that for as long as u can last...and ull get good. I promimse. And use a metronome...

I've been playing for 8 years and i find that it's not practising that improves my playing. Practising improves my stamina and the fluency of playing scale patterns which comes in useful for transposing and fast music(i get most of my exercises from the arban cornet method). But i feel what actually improves my playing is the playing i do in different ensembles as it teaches me to play in many different timbres. I also find that listening to a wide variety of styles of high quality trumpet playing and then trying to immitate the tone and fluency of the playing has really helped me in the last 1/2 years.

Im not trying to sound like a preacher i just found this really helped me.
