I have found a used 1972 bach tr300 trumpet at a good price and it looks good. Also, a deal on a new trumpet. This is for my middle school aged son that is changing from the baritone to trumpet this year. He took lessons all summer, so we know he will enjoy the new instrument. The main difference he sees is the extra fingerhook on the new trumpets in the thumb area. Other than that, what do you experienced players recommend??

New or old, a trumpet doesn't change in any way unless it takes damage. Using a trumpet will not do anythign to it but maybe wear down the laquer or silver ...but that doesn't effect the sound. If you found a nice used trumpet that's cheaper buy it. Umm you want a beginner horn...nothing fancy. Take out 250 bucks and buy a used horn somewhere. Just check if the valves are moving and see if there are any dents or dings. If there are dings on any of the slides .. that's going to effect the sound. SO used beginner horn with no damage that's cheap..and ur set.
