Yo everyone in the house!!!
I have a very big dillemina; in fact its so big, I think it could mean the very end of the world.
JOking.
Neways, (my name is Jazz by the way) I love music. It's like my life. Everytime I walk down freshly-emptied hallways over at Kubasaki High school and I hear the soft tinkle tinkle I stop and listen. I've always been infulenced with music. Rock, classical, country, voice, insturments, band, heck even comp music
I am not bragging.
I have played every instrument my band offers, excpept one thing I wanted to save for last: the TRUMPET.
And heres my dillemia: I have braces. I have never played an insturment I couldn't play. It was so difficult, I only got very low notes out. I couldn't even play a c! I went and got wax for my pain-in-the-butt braces but I can BARELY hit any notes now! I spent like 3 hours on the trumpet last night.
I didn't get on single note out in my piece that I chose whcich was Joplin (it was a peice from last year when I played clarinet). Clarinet and Trumpet are in the same range so I thought this is easy I can do it!!
Hm..the thing I really want to know is this: are there any trumpet players here that can play the trumpet with the braces? I mean really good? well thats an insult, I mean CAN play it? is it POSSIBLE?
Did I miss something? Sigh. Please respond..my life depends on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey i dont have braces but i have a palate expansion(it sounds horrible, but its not that bad).a palate expansion makes the roof of my mouth wider 'cause its to narrow.n e hoo,i have brackets on my teeth to hold it on and there is no wire(which really sucks)and my best advice as a trumpet player and an orthodontically challenged person,is to ditch the wax, fight the pain, and let your lip get tough.u r a trumpet player, and trumpet players aren't weenies!!! trumpetbabe2012

No . . . . .
Just, no. Ignoring the pain could cause permanent damage.
Get with either your band director or a private teacher and see if they can help.

I agree. Don't just ignore the pain. That could be dangerous. However, since you are new to trumpet, use the braces as an opportunity. One problem most players have is that they put too much pressure on their lips. Remember, there are only tiny muscles in your lips and they cannot take much pressure. If you practice using a lot of air and not a lot of pressure you'll be much better off. This way when you get the braces off, you'll have already learned not to use excess pressure and your playing will be a lot easier and sound great, if it doesn't already.
Hope this helps.

If you have any other questions, you can email me at bengewarmer@gmail.com. If I don't have the answer someone I know will. I have TONS of resources. Good luck.

I am using a friends account.I have braces and i play trumpet.
i am starting my third year of playing my trumpet. how long have you had braces in the first place. when i started playing
i had a problem , but now i don't.My lips got use to it after a while. if you just practice more and get your lips used to the sharp points on your braces, the pain will dicipate.

Hey I go to Canterbury H.S. music program on my trumpet... my grade 10 fellow trumpeter just got braces and attends all the practices anyways, she sounds horrible now but she uses wax and she says she'll get used to it over time. The thing is i don't quite know what will happen when you get your braces removed. I think that would make it even worse. But if you start learning the trumpet when you have braces, I don't think you should have too much problem. The transition is more difficult though i think.
PS what other brass instruments have you played?

In the last 18 years I have known alot of people who have braces and play the trumpet and they are good at it. Its going to take alot of practice and alot of patience on your part. With something new like that you can't expect to be perfect the first couple of times you try. It could take many months before you get it just right but it is possible.

I used to have braces. There are products such as brace covers that are plastic covers that fit around your braces, helping ease the pain. You'll have to find the brand for it yourself, because my middle school band director told me about it, but I was too lazy to get it. And if you're prone to mouth sores, you'll be in a living hell. I learned from experience.

I played the French Horn for eleven years and had braces all four year in high school - even through 3 years playing with the Contenental Honor League and one year with the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra. The secret, I believe, is free-buzzing. This is a technique you can use to strengthen your embechure without worrying about tearing up the insides of your lips with the mouthpiece. It will GREATLY reduce the amount of pressure you apply while playing, give you a greater range and flexability. VERY IMPORTANT

Spend atleast 30 minutes a day free-buzzing - BEFORE putting your lips to the mouthpiece. Focus on flexing the muscle in the middle of your lips while doing this. If that isn't motivation enough - This will make you a really good kisser

This website should be helpful
