Trumpet or violin? No contest. Trumpet easily.

I've played the trumpet for eight years and I have found that it is easier to buzz your lips than to use the bow with the violin. You really have to make that call on your own though, this is just my suggestion and experience.

yes ebay! it is a wonderful place to buy an instrument for a really good price, i got my bach stradavarius off ebay for $700! i am very very happy with it! the trumpet i thnink you should get would be a yamaha 2320, or a getzen student trumpet, the bach tr300's suck, don't get one of those.

if you want an alternative (although mroe expensive =[ ) to ebay, try wwbw.com
A king Silver Flair is a nice trumpet. It's an intermediate level, and for its money, is good.

For a great beginner horn, go against what you originally said, and search eBay for an Olds Ambassador horn. It may not look good, but it plays very well.
One of the best beginner horns out there.
