I know that you are supposed to breathe from your stomach/diaphragm because it gives more air. But whenever i do it, (my shoulder blades doesn't move), i just cannot seem to get in much capacity of air. My stomach seems to be "small". In fact i get more air breathing from my chest, than i do with my stomach! Now something is wrong, Any ideas?

Hi there, problem breathing eh? Well when you're breathing you don't want your shoulders to move up. You want to breathe in with the O. Like breathe in OHHHHHH and then when it feels like your lungs are filled breath in with the EEEEE and you'll fill up the rest of your lungs. Breathe all in one motion "OOHHHHHHHEEEEE" then play. I hope i have been of some help.

thanks. That helped a bit. Nevertheless i'm still having trouble getting in alot of air to last me a long time. I tried breathing ohh, and then eee, and i did feel air go into my stomach. Yet I get around the same amount of air using my chest, so that tells me something is wrong.

Don't think about it so much you have been breathing your ENTIRE life.
Take a really big breath until you can't possibley fit any more air in then sip in a bit more.
Just BREATHE man! BREATHE!!!

I like to think that taking in a good breath is like breathing through a piece of PVC pipe. You have to breath from the stomach, which is a great breath for tpt. It's ok if your shoulders go up when you breath, but make sure they are relaxed when you are actually playing. Cheers

I play tuba, but I believe this would apply here as well. You can do breathing with balloons to build up pressure. More headroom is always a good thing. You can last longer and you have more pressure so you can hit the accents the way you need to. As a tuba player I still have to breathe (VERY quickly) every measure, but as a trumpet player, you shouldn't need to. Good breathing is very important, at least for tuba.
