I've played trumpet for 9 years and have recently begun to pick up different instruments for an education degree. It seems that all of the instruments that I have tried as of now (saxes, tbone, tuba, french horn, ...basically many wind instruments) have been easy to pick up because I already have the necessary chops and muscle that I've developed from playing tpt. Many of my friends who play other instruments, however, find that it is hard to switch to other instruments because of chop issues. Because of this, I've begun to believe that maybe playing the trumpet (in specific) helps you to build necessary muscle and chops that can be used on a many different instruments, and may be the instrument of choice to learn on if you plan on playing a variety of instruments. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this topic, and/or have experienced similar results. Thanks

I too have begun to work on my music education degree. I could never just pick up an instrument and play it but it does seem to come a little easier than for most of my friends. I dont know if its so much the instument as it is the person. Some people can just play instruments, its genetics. I dont know if you can tell from my picture but my lips are huge and I would have to think that it has something to do with my ability to play wind instruments. It is a good quesiton though, never thought of trumpet playing from that angle before.

By the way, I've been playing trumpet for about 7 years now.

I've only played trumpet for 5 years, but I double on trombone in my band.

I also think it has to do with the person because I have been playing trombone for some time now and Ive recently picked up trumpet and found it reletively easy after a few seconds of getting my in the right spot on the mouthpiece. I have also tried french horn which I found to be a bit more difficult to pick up than trumpet but after getting used to the change in emboucher I was able to play a scale in about two octaves several minutes later.
