I just noticed that some of the world's best trumpet players have been absolutely huge and out of shape. Maynard Ferguson, Arturo Sandoval, Bobby Shew, and a whole bunch of others that I can't remember right now. Is this a coincidence? I tend to think so, but some of my friends have argued otherwise. Anyone have any thoughts? (And you don't have to list the great tpt players who aren't fat, we know they exist, just your thoughts on the conspiracy).

my teacher can play really hih and loud and he is no taller than me 5'3'', and he probably weigh less than me, 125 pounds.

Its all about the abdominal muscles...the bigger those are...the better the person plays...

I think it's a little more involved than just abdominal muscles...but I have seen Maynard's back!! It's rediculously strong..kinda nasty though.

Well i don't know if you have seen Wynton lately, but he is not exactly "slim and trim" anymore. Though that obviously doesn't have anything to do with HIS talent. And Sergei is a great classical player, but I've always held more respect for trumpet players who have a little more balanced approach. SO I wouldn't call him one of the best.

Well, I think (with the exception wynton) that some of the best JAZZ trumpeters have been rather rotund, but it does not apply with classical.

However, now that I think about it, it could be a conspiracy.

*imagines wynton in a hooded cloak in an underground corridor casting magic*

Awesome

There is a conspiracy. Wynton is now part of FTPFWD (Fat Trumpet Players For World Domination)

Most of the greats are a bit big because all they do is sit in a chair and practice. When they're not practicing they're giving a lesson or playing in something. It doesnt give you much time to go out and exercise. Think about it, how many band directors or musicians have you seen that have a six pack? The only skinny ones I know are the ones who are naturally skinny (people who can eat pounds of food and dont gain a pound), very young, or are starving.
