If you want to be taken seriously then take lessons. Lessons give you the individual attention that a regular band or orchestra class cant give you. I dont know any instructors up in that area but you can check the community college or talk to your music director, they should know or be able to find someone for you.

Private lessons are always helpful. Getting the perspective of another horn player, especially if they have a great deal more experience, is a great benefit.

For someone to train with, it will depend on your resources. Teachers and professors, performers, college students and others can be available. Check with the Music director at the local community college or the university. Put a notice up near the instrumental departments. There are lots of ways to find a "tutor".

I used to take private lessons, and it helped me tremendously. The reason I don't now is because we didn't have enough money to keep doing them.

I used to take private lessons also it was a huge help with my range and tone, i had to stop because during spring and summer i dont have as much time to do lessons but even if you do take them for a little while you can use the techniques your teacher gives you and work on them to help better you playing.
