Regarding Stamina, Accuracy, Range etc etc, Patrick Hession by far the best ...Heard him live with Maynard in London a few months ago, one of the best nights of my life ! (check the mf medley from his site and imagine how he plays 4 years later !! http://www.hessionssessions.com/Video_pages/mf_medley.html )i`m pretty sure it was Andrea Tofanelli that made a guest appearance at the same london gig, he was pretty outstanding as well.
Having said that i still listen to maynard every week on the ipod and james morrison is the reason i started playing jazz 10 years ago, never looked back ...

Regarding the best trumpet player, perhaps it`s more fair to name the top 10. Even that would be cause for some debate though. I saw Wynton perform for Kennedy Center honors and he did a piece honoring Tony Bennett. He was backed by Piano and Bass. The best part was towards the end. I could`t even see his fingers, they were moving so fast. I may put the video I captured up on the web, if anyone is interested. Did anyone else see this performance and if so what did you think?
Happy Playing.

I may be a flutist, but my friend`s brother played at the Kennedy Center in a quartet and he is REALLY GOOD...although he is a high schooler, he is going to be really good when he gets out of college.

There are many factors that contribute. First of all depending on the style of music u play, that will greatly alter your decisions. For some hot latin type of music, you may look toward Arturo Sandoval. He combines good elements of teqnique with high notes. A while back when he moved into USA he established himself as one of the greatest trumpet players in the world-but for the style he plays.
Then there are the jazz loving kind of people, for that note there is Winton Marsalis, Dizzie Gilespie. Dizzie played one of the most complicated styles of music which is bi-bop. Also you should take notice of the fact that he also greatly influenced Arturo Sandoval. Who could also forget Maynard Ferguson. So in conclusion, there is no "greatest trumpet player" It is what type of music you like to look into.

If you really want to hear a great Italian trumpet player, it`s not Chris Botti.....it`s a guy named Charlie Giambotta!
