I seem to be spitting into my trumpet much more than I should be, and I think the problem is getting worse. Any ideas about why this is happening, and how to correct it?

If you don't want to switch, try buzzing.
Try getting pitches.

If you want to switch, I'd say either french horn or trombone. Horn is a beautiful instrument when played correctly, and trombone is powerful and versatile. Baritone is a background instrument that, though important, is basically seen and not heard in an orchestra or band. Let me make my apology in advance to all the baritone players I just ticked off.
