My trumpet teacher can`t play high notes he is worth than me.

He tolled me that he use to play trumpet in college but he is a Clarnet player.

He has a degree in Music so he really knows the music.
He is also very good at teaching, but When I ask him to show me some High notes when we go over them He Can`t play them at all.
Like he can`t play the high F or the high G.

What should I do,I really don`t have other choice because there is no other music school in my area and this music school only has one Brass Instrument teacher.

He is really good at teaching like all the symbols and how to read all typs of signs but when it comes for him to show me something on the trumpet he can`t play. He always plays on his Clarnet and I play on the trumpet.
Do you think it`s a big problem and that I won`t learn a lot with ateacher that Can`t play the trumpet well??

Thanks
Dave

It depends. What category do you fit in? Are you a beginner, Intermediate, our Advanced trumpet player? If you are just beginning to learn about music and your instrument. Than its okay to learn from an intermediate player. But once you get a good grasp of the fundamentals of music than I suggest you travel out to your area and seek a professional Trumpet player.

When I was a beginning player. I used to be in the same boat as you. I learned the fundamentals, the basics of music from a saxophone player. . So I consider myself largely self-taught Trumpet player. And with effort I can hit above a Double C. So keep practicing!

I`m going to have to disagree with the last poster--you sound like a beginner in that you are just learning to read music and so forth, and for that aspect, an intermediate or non-trumpet-expert will be fine. But in my opinion, one of the most important investments you can make in playing an instrument is knowing what it`s "supposed" to sound like right from the start--and that means a weekly interaction with an expert on YOUR instrument who can not just show you, but let you hear, exactly what the trumpet is supposed to sound like. Also, experts on your instruments will know all the `tricks` and can teach you important skills you won`t get from a generalist--like how to do special fingerings, how to give your trumpet a bath, how to do basic repairs, etc.

You may not have to go through a music school to get quality instruction. The vast majority of private teachers teach out of their homes. Unless you live in a snowbound mountain cottage or omething, I`d bet you there are other trumpet teachers in your area--you just have to know where to find them.

Make some calls (or get your parents to do it if you`re too young) to people like:

1. Local high schools or middle schools with bands--many band directors keep running lists of local instruments teachers or know those people personally. If they don`t know of any, get them to inquire with the students in their classes about who they take private lessons with.

2. Call local colleges with music departments and ask if they have any professors or trumpet majors that you can get in touch with. College music majors that specialize in your instrument often make great private teachers, and often charge less than professionals.

3. Try internet listings for private music teachers like those at www.teachlist.com or www.musicstaff.com

4. Contact local music stores and ask if they keep lists of private teachers in the area--many do.

5. Local concert bands and symphonies -- ask for the names of their trumpet players and call them! Many of them teach lessons themselves, and still more don`t but will know someone who does.

That`s all a bunch of BULL!!! If you have a teacher that that can teach, don`t worry. I know the Trombone professor at Western Michigan cannot play his instrument because he did something to his lip. As long as you can hear professional sounds elsewhere, don`t worry. My trumpet teacher in high school was old, but he knew how to teach. Just because they may not have the same lip as they used to, it does not mean that they are holding you back. LISTEN TO RECORDINGS!!!
