a leadpipe is the long part that connects to the mouthpiece.

Reedy,
A leadpipe is the pipe that leads from the mouthpiece to the instrument. Many people going from intermediate levels to advanced levels may want to change their leadpipe for a variety of reasons. The taper inside the leadpipe may be different. Lots of things can go on inside that tube.

What many of us do is tape the new lead pipe we are trying next to the existing one and then move the main tuning slide from one pipe to the other.(remember they are right next to each other) Good leadpipe makers will often supply you with a device to secure the second leadpipe next to the original one.

Then when you decide you like the new one you have a repairman remove the old one and solder in the new one.
