Hey, Colin,
Sounds like a good tip, but is it really that simple for you? Do you follow a method or a teacher? C`mon, help me with this one.

Wow i don`t understand why every American brass player i speak to is obsessed with getting super notes. Does a lot of your tutor books or your orchestral or windaband music have all these notes written? Coz the highest i have to play and i play lead in an orchestra in England, is B on a regular occasiion, C if i`m lucky. And our solo books, grade exam systems don`t expect us to go much above a C!
Please can you clarify this. Is it because you need to to play pieces or do you just like being able to play higher than the others in your music group and just like seeing how super high you can get?
I know that of course, it is essential to be able to play high, but why spend lots of time trying to play notes that you`ll never, ever need to play very often in an ensemble (i of course recognise that it is cool to screech out a super A if there is one written as a jokey note etc. lol) but do you ever actually have these notes written into your regular ensemble music?
Not criticising, just curious.
Thanks.

Im with you Dawn! What is it with all you American Trumpet players? You all seem obssesed with the 3rd octave! Its great i suppose, if your into it, but there is sooo many other facets to playing brass. Why are they not disscussed? Double Ab at the age of twelve? I can play em, but it took ten years before I even thought about it. It must be something in the water over there!

haha very amusing..
LOL~

well All i can say as a high school trumpet player studying at Juliard Prep. is that maybe 30-40 min out of the Arbans book, a good warm up before practicing, proper embochure, and confidence will get you through the hardships of playing high notes..

Remember...

Practice!!!! But most of all the most important is playing Long tones, and Petal Tones RELAXED!!! I cannot stress this enough!!! RELAX WHILE PLAYING YOUR INSTRUMENT!!!!

Most of the jazz parts I play require a minimum Double G in my jazz band. Probably the music form with the most high notes for trumpet players. That`s what`s up with all us "americans", but I do agree that orchestral music doesn`t require much above C. Not a fan of orchestral music myself. I hate violins in mass, ahhhhhh!

I just got into Jazz band, been playing for about 3-4 yrs now...I can `fluently` play up to a high C (above staff)but when I get higher it sorta cracks ..A good trumpeter to listen to is Maynard Ferguson. His peices have a tite tune and are quite challenging to play.Btw spencer that Tank link doesn`t work...can you send me the piece at diadeloz@yahoo.com? I love that song and would like to play it

Oh additionally, playing with a mouthpiece that helps you hit the high range lowers your tone quality. You can practice with another mouthpiece that helps you play high and switch like every week or so with your normal mouthpiece to build endurance. Its all practice.

what i do is relax as much as i can. i think about pitch but not the height of the note. about the long tones i like to do octave slurs. the scales i play 2 or 3 the octaves. after tHAT I PLay petal tones. i did this when i was working range. now i can hit c and e`s 2 octaves above the staff
