I can play the high high high g

Im in 7th grade and im not too good at playing high notes. tons of people that posted messages can hit really reallly high notes that i cant even imagine playing. playing with a good tone, i can only hit the F on the top line of the staff. Pitiful! the band directors think im all good just because the notes i can play have better sound than most of the other 7th graders, so they give me the stupid first trumpet music in full band (with the 8th graders too) with notes up to like B (which are like impossible for me) and im soo embarassed of how bad i sound. I really want to be able to play those notes, so i practice alot every night and do long tones and lip slurs and scales but nothing works for me. the E is what i could hit last year and through all this time i haven`t improved much. one note. im so frustrated. any really helpful tips?

With all due respect reed...
Changing a mouthpiece will do nothing to help your range dramatically. It is like sticking a chrome exhaust tip on a honda...pointless, its still slow.
What I mean is, the mouthpiece helps...when you are advanced enough to know how to manipulate them. I play on a 3c, but I can hit a High G just fine on a 7c (starter mouthpiece) Sure, the smaller the cup the more it helps to produce clearer, sharper high notes, but will not help this kid with the amount of reach he is talking about. practice lip slurs, being able to control the high notes is key.

Hey man, dont worry about all these people saying they have been playing for 1 year and hitting the double octave G...they cannot. Most trumpet players will say they play the high G... when in actuality it is only the G on top of the staff. Most people who say they can play a double c or g... cannot read music correctly, and think they can, but actually can only play a high c (2 lines above staff). Also, Dont worry that in 1 year your range has gone up 1 note, ask any professional, it takes a long time to increase your range efficiently, I have talked with some pros who say 1 note a year. Look at maynard ferguson, he has been playig forever, it would make sense for him to go 1 note a year. Dont be intimadated, high isnt everything, I myself can play high, but I dont brag about it, I have awsome technique, and pride myself for learning and getting down triple tougning. Only about 30 min of my 2 hour daily practice routine is on range. Just keep at it

I agree with trumpetsforever. But make sure the time you spend practicing or just fooling around with the horn that you learn and apply what you are trying to accomplish. Yea it takes time but if you want to shorten that time youve gotta find out how you learn your own personal technique. Its kinda like walking into a weight room. There are so many machines and exercises that its only natural to get overwhelmed and get no where. Best place to start is to replicate what you see in your senior trumpeters or private instructor. Replicate as much as you see and hear. Ask yourself what works best; kissy face, smiling, frowning, "oh" shape, whatever. I can admit that it took me a year to figure out and master my upper register work but i was able to add on an entire fifth to my range.

BTW, i searched for amisher, someone said amisher is a muscle in the lip.........uh..no........? Anyone....? amisher......?

It sounds like there are alot of people who can play realy high. I`m in 10th grade and can play an E above the staff. My friend who is also in 10th grade can play a a G an octave over the G over the staff. He is an awsome jazz player and made the top jazz band in the state. That spencer who talked about his range as a 12 year old sounded unbelievable. Have you guys ever seen Patrick Hession. He plays notes about 4 octives over the C over the staff, the highest playing trumpet player ever!

Hey you poor guys you are all so wonderful with your high notes and it`s very easy to write down what tones you are able to produce. Let me try:

I`m playing for 2 months now and I have no problems with the triple high f. It`s only forte, but that`s enough for me because you sure all can imagine, how loud my double high c in nearly all occasions sounds...

Don`t look for high notes, but for good sound over a wide range, because music is nothing than SOUND!!!!

BTW, any of you trumpeters considering drum corps? This activity i believe was what helped shape me into the trumpeter i am today, especially as a lead player. Im in my third season and im ready to add a major loud upper register work. Power is good! Plus, if your range is at least a d or e above high c, and maybe you want to work on adding power you should really consider it. Im sorry for advocating drum corps but i havent met any other lead players through drum corps. I know a hand full of fine lead players that just tear paint off of walls but not enough! Its a beautiful challenge, ages is from 14 to 21 look into it guys it maybe the breaking point for your endurance and range!

god am i embarrased... i really do suck at trumpet. but i have improved greatly since the beginning of this school year. then, i couldnt even play a D (second line on staff) but now i can play Fs on high staff sometimes (please pity me) i found that suppose you want to play a D but its too high for you. try playing the B, C, then the D. that helped me alot. and also, PRACTICE!!! i just realized how important it is to do that frequently, and now that ive started, im improving exponentially.

The original purpose of this topic was to get advice, not brag. Unless I misinterpreted it...

Anyway, don`t feel bad, I am a junior in high school, been playing trumpet for 6 years now and I can only hit a B above the staff on a good day. Though this is mostly because I don`t practice too much. But I want to play in college, so I`m gonna try some of the tips some suggested so I can get up there. But I agree, the best way to get anywhere is practice, practice, practice. My brother also plays trumpet, he`s 3 years older than me. He made an astounding revalation: The more you try and play the high notes, the easier they become. Imagaine that
