Hi folks
After years of playing another instrument (accordion) Ive started to learn the cornet.
Ive been at it now for about a month. I can get the the low notes below the staff and up to Bflat on the staff but cant get any higher. should I be able to get higher than this or is it something that will come with work and practice?
What do you experienced players reckon?
Thanks for any help you can offer
Tom

Hey Tom, Im a cornet player like yourself but iv been playing for the last 8years and i try and play trumpet. 8years ago was a long time ago so i dont really rember how well i was doing after a month but i can still try and help. to be honist a Bb is ok after only a month of playing thats not bad, just dont tence your neck, mouth area but tense your stomach as if someone is about to punch you! (best advise iv ever had) i would recomend playing lots of bottom notes bottom C downwards, try and play a bottom G for 2minutes and see how hard it is, but its good fro you, i would strongley recomend a Arban, there about £20 but well worth it! it has everything in it that a cornet player needs its a cornet player bible basicly. you could also try doing dominant 7ths, I love these there really good so you can go C,E,G,Bb then try for a C do it slured though and take your time this will help your range and if you do it fast it will help your flexability.

and keep practising

no prob, I would also strongly recoment joining a band, try finding a local brass band to join, you will lurn many skills, its one thing lurning to play buy yourslef as a soloest but its another blaying with a band, i would say its harder. but thats up to you. also practice playing long notes, this will help your stamina, improve your tone and train your lungs to use as much oxogen as possible, which will help your playing alot.
