Hi, my friend currently plays Trumpet, a 600L from Jupiter, and is planning to be a Baritone. He says he can beat all the other Low Brass people that have a chance for section leader, like me, another trombonist, and a baritone player. I will have 1 year experience by the end of band camp, and the other trombonist, 3 years, but I'm already almost as good as the other trombonist. The Baritone player has played for 2 or 3 years if I remember. But my friend thinks he can be Section Leader of Low Brass just by playing Baritone for 2 weeks of band camp. Sure, they have the same T.C. notes and fingerings. But what he doesn't understand is that he can't complete a transition in 2 weeks. He won't be able to be a great Baritone player in 2 weeks. He thinks he has a bigger chance then all us other low brass people. The transition from a .460" Trumpet bore, to a .562" Baritone bore would be a big change, and he'll need much more air support. He will also need much more air to play loud. And the mouthpiece of a Baritone is about 3x bigger. Won't his transition be hard? He's !***!ed at me, because I'm doubting him. He says that he won't need to take summer lessons. I just think it's outrageous.

Outrageous, perhaps . . . but won't it be funny when he does challange and wins section leader?

Practice well.

sounds egotistic...a typical trumpet player.

It sounds like playing flute, and then trying to pick up piccolo. Same fingerings, but totally different embouchure. I'm still trying to get the hang of picc after playing flute for a LONG time, and I've been trying to learn picc for about a year now.

Still, watch your back. There was a bassoon player back in seventh grade. I took a bassoon home for 2 weeks, loved it, and kicked his butt at it. He quit playing bassoon for band the next week.

Just goes to show, he might have a fighting chance, but I doubt it. (especially if he's to egotistic to get some help! a guy like that doesn't deserve 1st chair)

<Added>

by "he doesn't deserve first chair" I meant that he won't learn, and learning and teaching others is what first chair's all about. If he isn't responsible enough to get lessons for something he's never played before, and brags that he doesn't need them, then he isn't responsible enough to teach others. Plus-he would just teach incorrect information.

Well, turns out he didn't get section leader, and I'm still beating him by a mile :P I might be co, lately I've been asked to step up, and set some examples for marching (maybe not posture x] but marching straight), chromatic scales, and tuning, etc. Sorry I didn't reply for a while :P

Yeah that was obvious. I am playing trumpet for years and I decided also to learn Baritone. I am practicing nearly a year now and I am far from where I want to be. Practice and a lot of time is necessary for every instrument.

Greetings from Bavaria / Germany
