Beginning trumpet, but not music!

Hey everyone, im in 11th grade, and consider myself a very avid music player. My principle instrument is Clarinet, and i also self-taught myself tenor sax, and play it in a Jazz ensemble.
I have a trumpet and a 5C mouthpiece here. I would love to learn to play trumpet My band director says that the 5C mouthpiece is the best for beginners, which is good because that’s what I have, but I always thought 7C was the best (for beginners). I started last year a little, and for the first couple of months I played a lot out of the Essential Elements book. Well that book sucks. I know most of the easy fingerings(aka G second line in the staff to G on staff), but need a more complex trumpet book. I know TONS about music, theory, etc.., and half the book telling me what a quarter note is, is not what I need.
Can anyone tell me a good book for someone that is not new to music, but a new instrument? Basically my goal is to march trumpet in college (around two years). I want a routine that will make the max progress out of the least time.
Thanks!

Hello,
I also play trumpet for about 5 month.
I just finished with the same book and that book does suck, too easy.
Well when my teacher gets a good book I will tell you the name.
Good Luck with your trumpet!

All my beginning band, intermediate band students use the standard of excellence series for their instruments. It has different levels for different players, solos and arrangements to play with others.

The arbans book is a good choice. It has things for beginners to the very experienced.

Well, I`ll have to get back to you on that. Last year when I was starting the Trumpet in Grade 8, they had an awesome beginner book that was really well done. It`s got some illustrations to show specifics, and has some pretty difficult little pieces, along with some easy ones. I`ll get taht name for you by tuesday.

Hey I know what you mean. I played clarinet for 2 years then in my 8th grade year I switched to trumpet. I knew how to read music and everything but I used the standard of excellence books. They seem a little too easy but it does help cause im only in my 2nd year of playing trumpet and im 1st chair in a 20 person section. Hope this helps man.

Arban`s is the trumpet players bible.
Buy it.
The beginning has runs of quarter notes...but then after about page 1 you never see that again. So it is a comfortable start, and then you`ll be into learning common trumpet fingerings and techniques. if you DO get the book, and want some advice on where to start with it (it`s quite a hefty book) i`d be more than happy to give you some reference points with certain excercises that will help you the most at a beginners level.

essential elements was what I started on... and I wouldn`t say it sucks... buuut... it is simple..
Arban`s Complete Conservatory Method kicks butt.
I had to play some of three of the etudes from that book my 9th grade year for our All-State tryouts... and they were very fun and very challenging to play.
there`s like 200 pages in the book and it`s a good investment for you as a trumpet player(if you`re serious)

JasonA -
Get the basics...you know:
-Arban
-Clark`s Technical Studies
-Clark`s Characteristic Studies
-Charlier`s Etudes
-Concone`s Lyrical Studies
Get them, and though they`re geared for pros, if you know about music, you`ll do well and excel very quickly.
There are a TON of books out there,
but those cover the basics of technique and style.
Cheers,
Aaron

Our band director has us playing out of the Stardard of Excellence series (red is book I) right now and I know it`s a lot better then Essentials because it starts you out easy then gets harder as time progresses and you get to see how your part fits into a band better....not to mention the solos it gives.
