Greetings,
I need some advice on switching from Trumpet to Tuba. Our band is short 2 tuba players. And I will be trying out for the position. The band teacher says "The tuba player is the foundation of the band.. yada yada yada." So will I be a good competitor for the trombone players trying out? The fingerings are the same as trumpets, but are the notes harder to read? Also im the top 3 best of trumpets and my band class, and never played on a low brass insturment.

I played Tuba long time ago and it`s much easier than playing trumpet.
You should not have problems reading notes because they are th same.

The only problems you might have is that it is low... really low. You will get used to it. And it is easier, all you do is umpa umpa umpa during songs, but occasionaly you can get a cool tuba part. It isn`t exactly like Trumept because you go down to the bass clef where you have to learn where all the notes go there but they are still called the same.

I`ve had two students do the same thing this year in my band class and they both love it. They think that playing the tuba not only widents their playing ability but it has helped them to play their trumpet and trombone better.

all you people that say tuba is easier really suck...you don`t just to "umpa umpa" there is way more to it--the tuba suports the whole band, they set the beat and everyone tunes to the tuba. It`s the best! I think you`re making a great desision.

I play both tuba and trumpet semi-proessionally and neither one is "easier", they both have their individual challenges. Tubas are harder to carry on a morotcycle, however....

tuba rules.... it is the horn of all horns. i play tuba and t-bone. you should have no problem switching from trumpet to tuba. the fingerings are exactly the same, although you have to learn to read in the f clef. the t-bones players have an advantage in that they already read in the F cleff. the tuba has the same fingerings as the baritone which are also the same as the trumpet. you can read trumpet music on tuba using the same fingerings and you will get the same melody, same goes for baritone.
