I have been learning jazz trumpet for about 3 weeks now and wondered if anyone out there has any tips for beginners?

I am practicing long held notes (I can do about 30 seconds - is that good or bad?) am playing some major scales (I can do about 4 scales but I`m not v good on high notes) and I can play the head to Summertime.
Anything else that people suggest I try? What were your experiences as a beginner? Any good online resources or books/CDs I should get hold of?

If you`re a beginner with the trumpet, start to practice just with your mouthpiece, then with your trumpet!

Hi,
I`m a beginner too. I tried practicing with just the mouthpiece, but I get really dizzy almost immediately. What to do?

Try to take it easy and don`t push yourself to much.

What kind of breaths do you take?
Do you blow hard, if so you shouldn`t blow too hard.

Guys you are great for choosing th trumpet. I would suggest playing and buzzing on your mouth piece first and then go to your trumpet and play scales and work on making a firm embrochure and work with sound quality and tongueing.

I occasionally get a bit dizzy too, but my teacher says that it`s just getting used to a new skill. Perhaps you`re a bit tense when playing? I`ve noticed that at first I was so keen to get it right, all my muscles were really tense... now I just try and chill and enjoy it!

Thanks for the tips. I can now play the head to Summertime and Georgia on my Mind. I`m working on my embouchure but am still not sure I`m doing the right thing... what are people`s opinions on how much pressure you should put on the mouthpiece? I sometimes have red round marks where the mouthpiece has been - am I pressing too hard?
