My teacher told me to always pull out the main slide out a little to play notes in tune.

So I always pull out the slide out a lttile but I talked to another person who tols me not to do that but to learn how to play in tune notes with the slide closed.

Do you ever adjust your slide to keep in tune with others??

Do you practice with your slide closed or out a little??

thatks

It`s okay to pull the slide out. It just means you tend to play sharp. But it would be awesome if you can lip the pitch down a bit so you don`t have to push the slide. Not a big deal though, just as long as you sound good.

When you use your third valve...some notes do tend to be sharp. That is why that slide is there. When you play a C# or D or any other note using the 3rd valve, you can opt to pull it out if want to be perfectly in tune. You will probaby have to pull it out more for the C# then the D, or at least I have to on my trumpet.

Note: Usually only professional need this in orchastras of ensamble stuff or when you REALLY need to be perfectly in tune with others, like in recordings. You can use your air to bend the pitch to to make it perfect, but most people can`t tell if it is sharp anyway. Like I said, it doesn`t make to big of a difference if you don`t use it, nobody will tell the difference.

If you are talking about the tuning slide: Usually you have to ajust this in order to play in tune perfectly with others. When you trumpet is in a warm atmosphere like room temp or hotter, for with probaby have to pull the tuning slide out because your trumpet will probably be sharp. If you are outside in cold air or something(Maching Band MAybe?) you will have to push it in cause it will probably be flat. It all has to do with the metal expanding and contracting.

In the band we have to pull out that slide of our conductor and that`s the second condustor who says it. I don`t find it easy to do that so i try it with my lips. And the conductor says that it is OK.

The trumpet was designed so that the tuning slide is out about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch to play in tune. That is where the horn will resonate best. If you have a good horn and proper form, that is where the tuning slide should be.

You shouldn`t be scared to pull out your main tuning slide. If you find that with proper air support you are in tune with the slide 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch out, that`s ok. You shouldn`t try to always lip down because this will affect your ability to hit the center of a pitch.

it`s easiest to pull out the slidejbut you could adjust with your mout and air speed to play in tune. neither is more right than the other

If you are talking about the main tuning slide, yes, you need to pull out, and you should pull out until you are in tune (or if you are flat, push in until you are in tune) use a tuner to check. If you are talking about the third valve slide, then no you dont have to, but its easier at first. I just adjust my lips a little and its second nature to me now.

Just play in tune! I cant remember the last time I moved my tuning slide! Get someone to play a note then mimick it. It is not hard, just a case of using your ears. In an ensemble situation, you can always hear a tonal centre, let the lips do the rest! If anything, I keep my slide nearly all the way in. It seems to give me more stamina cause i can sit low on the note, and if i get tired, it helps me keep the pitch up. Its all about your ears, slides are over rated. If every brass player in a group moves their slides to get the Bb in tune, then every other note can suffer. Seriously, get use to not playing tuning notes.

You should always tune your instrument, so that you have the instrument in tune. There will be notes on the instrument that are out of tune, but you will have the instrument as a whole in tune. Tune Bb brass instruments to concert Bb. And if your trumpet has slides that are moveable while playing, use them. They are there for a reason. If you change the pitch using your lips, you are forcing the instrument to resonate at a point where it should not be resonating, and you won`t get a very solid core to your sound. So use your slides and your ears to play in tune.
