Hello!
I think I know someone who could do it. She goes by "trumpetplayer87" on the trumpetherald forum (www.trumpetherald.com).
YOu could ask if she`s willing to do it; she did some painting on hers and it looked ok...
I hope this helps...

She`s my sister!! Small world ain`t it? Here`s her web site: http://trumpetplayer87.tripod.com
She is thinking of painting a horn *PINK*. Exciting. She`s also got this great little ring of `jewels` to put on the rim of your bell. She has pictures on her site.

Tim - I play trumpet yes, but I`m not a serious as Bonnie.
We do have a family ministry traveling to churches and nursing home etc. ( http://10macdonald10.tripod.com)
I usually end up with lead when we play together, only because I can`t get the hang of playing harmony by ear. When we use printed music I play 2nd.
How long have you played trumpet?

Great! I understand how it is; when my pastor and I play, I prefer lead for the same reason. I drive him nuts because I view sheet music as "a suggestion"! I can read music but have to work at it, and frankly while I know this sounds reallllly arrogant, I view playing by written music as "painting by the numbers". I don`t mean it that way, but I know it sounds that way.
I prefer to play from my heart, not my head so much.
Anyway, I`ve been playing off and on since the mid `60s, when I picked up my older brother`s conn director cornet. I started learning on my own. Herb Alpert was a *big* deal then, and was my model. I played in Jr. High, then High school. I was first chair second band, but made the mistake of accepting promotion to last chair first band. YOu know what happened....especially when the teacher`s nickname was "blood and guts rynott". Her goal was glory no matter what it took. Not good.
AFter high school, I put my strad down for a very long time except for a few spurts...then two years ago I was off work sick for four months so I picked it back up again. I`ve been fairly steady since.
My biggest improvement came when I sold my Elkhart strad and got my Benge. Immediate improvement in range and endurance. My sound wasn`t breaking up anymore either.
I play at church when I play. Also, I enjoy working on horns. I`m an out of work computer professional...but enjoy buying inexpensive used horns, fixing them up and giving them to kids who are interested in playing...you know what I mean, the kids who come up to you when they see your horn and get a thrill out of making a noise!
Blessings to you, and great to hear from you!
Tim

Doesn`t painting change the tone of your horn? Like the difference between silver plated, gold plated, plain brass, and laquered horns...

u change the quality of your tone not the paint. if some thing is silver plaited it woud soung better than brass plaited. if something is gold plaited you`ll have really good tone but it`s a cheap way to come about it

Colin:
I`ve never heard that. Can you tell me where the information is on that study?
Caitlin:
Yes, there is a difference in plating types and their effect on darkness and brightness of sound. Silver plate results in a brighter sound, generally. If you start with three identical horns, and give each one a different finish, the silver will generally be brightest, Lacquer next and gold plate the darkest. There is at least one or more entire threads dedicated to this at www.trumpetherald.com.
The difference has to do with how free the bell is to vibrate. Painting a horn will effect it to one degree or another..darkening the sound...but since I`ve never done a comparison, I can`t tell you how much difference there would be. But I would expect there to be a dampening effect, just as with Lacquer.

Hi y`all, I am Bonnie
I think most people need not worry about the way the finish effects their tone. I have played on both brass and silver and I don`t really notice that much of a difference, it seems to me that brass is slightly brighter than silver, but it`s not consistent. It depends on the horn. Play around, and if you`re looking at a horn to buy, try to play as blindly as you can, the finish really should have no bearings on your decision.

Colin, you are an idiot. Not all horns sound the same. Monettes sound considerably different from one of those $10 eBay Indian horns. Much as the quality of the instrument affects it, the characteristics of the horn do too. Bore size, material, weight, bell shape, leadpipe, etc all have a tremendous effect on the horn. ANd finally, the finish. Your basic finish is none. Just leave the horn in raw brass. This finish gives the most clear, ringing tone. It`s my favorite, except it is a pain to take care of. Next you have lacquer. This finish kills the resonance and makes you sound dead. Lacquer is crap. Don`t get it. If you get it, strip it off. Next is nickel plating. It gives a bright sound, similar to silver plating. Nickel is usually used just because of the way it looks. Silver plating is next. It also brightens the sound, and requires some maintenance,to keep it from tarnishing. Finally, gold plate. This is the darkest sounding finish, and gives a warm broad sound. Monette`s nicest horns are finished exclusively in this finish, and it is an option on all horns.
Not all horns are created equally, and not all finishes are either. And any player who is arrogant enough to think they are better than everyone else, and needs attention enough to say that they are, probably isn`t a better player, and almost certainly is a stupider person. So let`s not do that, okay?
