I think that they are all true, sadly. I`ve been playing trumpet for about 6 years, and I`m a junior in high school. Our jazz band functions like a unit, and competition is not stressed. The only reason why one trumpet is called the "first" is because he stands in the middle. I`ve always heard some jokes from people who play clarinet and the like (who really shouldn`t be throwing stones in a glass house) about how all trumpeters are arrogant, cocky, competitive, and self-centered. I was taken aback by them, because I had no idea what they were talking about. After reading some of the posts on this board (especially by the younger trumpeters), I know exactly what they are talking about.

People, I have a few pointers that may set some of you straight and which will fix some of your misconceptions:

1. Playing High does not make you good.
2. Your mouthpiece cannot effect your range (just your endurance).
3. Bragging about your accomplishments over the internet will do nothing but give you false pride.
4. The only way to get respect and admiration from others (for ANYTHING) is to let your actions, not your mouth, do the talking.

Anytime you guys want to talk about the trumpet as an instrument or its place in the music scene, then go for it. All of you know that nobody wants to hear about how "so and so sucks because..." or "Hey guys, guess what I did!..." I think nowadays the younger trumpets are becoming too focused on "How can I impress my peers easily" rather than "How can I become a great musician?", which is sad.

Thoughts?

Now that you have figured that out, it will make your life as a musician a great deal easier. Good job.
