when i got braces it helped a lot if i pushed the air out with my abs a lot more. but it would probably also help if u tried to press ur lips as lightly as possible on the mouthpiece (it would mean changing ur umbrouchure a lot). but if this doesnt work, try wax and readd all the other entries and see if anything works.

Wow I wish I knew about all of these remedies when I had braces. Anyway I was given wax by my orthosdontist and told not to get the mouth guard. Needless to say the wax created more problems than it solved so I just let it callus over.
If you don`t get both sets off together get the bottoms off first if possible.
Also make sure you will be able to play trumpet after they are off. After mine came off my orthodontist told me that my front teeth were too weak to play the trumpet
This brings me to something else. I haven`t played my trumpet in five years in fact nobody has. My cousin thinks he wants to try to play will the instrument still be good, I mean have good tone and all of that?
It is a Yamaha student model it is 13years old. I played for 8 of those years.
If my cousin doesn`t want it how long will it be good for not being played?
I know I should have posted this as a new topic I tried to the other day and it was removed from the forum. I guess it was due to lack of replies.

I just got bracese, and I read the post that said to use cigarette paper. I wouldn`t have any cigarette paper, so I started thinking of other stuff I could use instead. Then I realized that tea bag paper would work too. It holds up well in water, and it works on my braces. I would use a strong tea bag, like the lipton tea bags. I just cut off the tip, near the string, and pour out the dry tea. If there isn`t any tea left on the paper, then it shouldn`t have any taste whatsoever. Just take a piece of the paper (single sheet) and cut it about 1 inch by 2 inch. Fold it hot dog style, then hotdog style again. Then fold it hamburger style to make it shorter. Put it in your mouth, or soak it in water for a second to make it wet. Then just stick the paper on the brackets that hurt you the most. I played my trumpet without the paper first, and then with. It felt soooooooo good!!!!! I could actually play high without it hurting. Try it!

Ok.. I`ve been playing trumpet for about a year now. I started in about October with the band.. then in June.. I got braces. *Dramatic chord*
Anyways... I didn`t have as much trouble as you guys did. This is what I decided to do:
I used wax for about a week. Then I started to use less. And less. And less.
After a while the inside lip will start
Before I got braces I was lucky to get a high E. Now I`m at a Bb above the the staff.
When you get them off.. wow. I can`t even think of how much range I`ll have.. anyways.. hang tough people. It only takes about a week to adjust. Good luck everyone.

*first the most important thing is AIR..AIR..and more AIR!
*next sit up, edge of your chair and firm up your abs (to support the amount of air you use)
*I do warm ups including breathing patterns, loads of buzzing on the mouthpiece, and taking out the main tuning slide of the trumpet and playing notes high and low (dont worry about the sound that comes out just use Air)
*Remember buzzing on the trumpet mouthpiece will help because the mouthpiece is what makes the sound the trumpet is just an amplifier*
