im a french horn player. I found this site and i really like it. i was hoping to find a french horn forum, but couldn`t find one, and since the horns and trumpets support each other in a way, and are both brass intruments, i figured this would be a good board to post on.
I am in my first year of college and am majoring in french horn and minoring in music performance at the University of Southern California. I have been playing the french horn for 10 years so far, I started in 4th grade.
You guys probably think the trumpets rule, but remember the horns do to. Ever hear Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed....Wow. The French Horns dominate the song.
Nothing else to say, but I am glad that I found a place where i can talk music with other musicians.

Yeah, majoring in French Horn in college is tough stuff. It seems all we do is practice. But I love it. We play some beautiful pieces so it is actually enjoyable to play. When you get 4 horns together playing an amazing arrangement of Amazing Grace, it makes it all worth while. I love the sound of the French Horn.

french horn rules, I`ve played trumpet for 8 years and now I`ve just switched to horn/mello a few months ago. we need out own forum!

I think French Horns sound much better than a trumpet. I`ve never played one before, but I still like them. They sound so beautiful!

i`m a trumpet/french horn/melophone/B pitched flugel. trumpet is my favorite but i like the mellow sounds of the other three instruments. i like trumpet the most just because of jazz music. flugel is my next favorite because of jazz also. but i play french horn in church and march with mellophone.

p.s- i`m 15 and play with professional bands and get paid for it. i`m looking for colleges now 1 graduate whin i`m 17. i`ve been looking mostly at juliard. does anyone else have any suggestions.

p.p.s- i`m about to start learning clarinet/sax do you think i should be a brass major or band major or music major? (I also sing)

julliard is good, but really really hard to get into. Eastman is another good music school.
The French Horn is the best sounding instrument of the whole ensemble. The horns have great sound and parts, like in movie scores. Apollo 13, The Patriot, The Lord of the Rings just to name a few. Anybody play `October` written by Eric Whitacre, listen to it. It is a great peice.

October is an AMAZING piece. Everyone should take a listen.
